About The Department

World War II was the originating point for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS). War time came with complex facial and jaw injuries that required surgical treatment. With their knowledge of jaw structure and bite alignment (occlusion), dentists played a key role in shaping OMFS as it is today.

OMFS is a unique specialty that sees the meeting of two worlds – dental precision with medical surgery. This combination opens our specialists to treating minor to complex surgeries requiring hospital care.

OMFS has evolved from being a dental specialty focused on extractions, impaction of teeth, and jaw-related diseases to being a diverse dental surgical field. The specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has branched out to now cover:

1. Facial trauma management
2. Cosmetic and corrective jaw surgery (Orthognathic Surgery)
3. Oral rehabilitation through dental implants
4. Jaw joint disorder management
5. Management of oral pre-cancers and cancer of oral cavity
