About the Department

Inaugurated in 1987, the Department of Psychiatry provides evidence-based clinical and welfare services. Since 2013, we have been licensed by the State Mental Health Authority to run an in-patient psychiatry ward. Today, we care for nearly 30,000 patients a year, addressing diverse psychiatric needs.

Our Psychiatric services include: 

1. De-addiction service
2. Child psychiatric care
3. Marital therapy
4. Psychosexual care
5. Geriatric psychiatric care

On the educational front, we provide training in psychiatry at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We also train post-graduates in the fields of General Medicine, Community Medicine, and Forensic Medicine. Our goal is to create an environment that promotes learning and self-growth. We do this by focusing on foundational principles of proficiency, critical thinking, and individualism.

Beyond this, our department contributes to the training of students in associated disciplines. This includes Psychology, Social Work, Pharmacy, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, and other allied health sciences. 

We are proud to actively contribute to the advancement of psychiatry through our research efforts. Our faculty lead and contribute to research projects across departmental, institutional, and international boundaries. We ensure that we are always armed with the latest knowledge and skills to care for our patients.

We believe in extending care and support beyond our walls. We regularly conduct outreach programs around mental well-being for communities. These programs help us spread awareness, understanding, and knowledge of mental health issues among larger populations.
